Dissident Austrian priests defying their Catholic Church with calls for married clergy, women priests and other reforms enjoy wide public support, according to a new poll on a dispute that could lead to their dismissal. Three-quarters of people polled in the traditionally Roman Catholic country backed the priests’ “Call to Disobedience,” a manifesto that Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schönborn compares to a football team refusing to play by the rules.

The revolt, openly supported by 329 priests, threatens a split in the Austrian Church weeks before Pope Benedict’s Sept 22-25 visit to neighbouring Germany. Benedict, 84, grew up in Bavarian villages close to the Austrian border.

Rather than simply appealing for reforms, the dissidents declared they will break Church rules by giving communion to Protestants and remarried divorced Catholics or allowing lay people to preach and head parishes without a priest. Schönborn has hinted they would be disciplined if they do not back down in the coming weeks. “This cannot go on,” he told the Vienna daily Der Standard. “If someone has decided to go down the path of dissent, that has consequences.”

Dissident leader Rev Helmut Schüller, who as Vienna vicar general was Schönborn’s deputy from 1995 to 1999 and once led the Austrian chapter of the international Catholic charity Caritas, has said he has no intention of giving up. He says many priests are already quietly breaking the rules anyway, often with the knowledge of their bishops, and his campaign aims to force the hierarchy to agree to change. About 8 percent of Austrian priests have supported his movement.

Paul Zulehner, a leading Catholic theologian, said the Church must act urgently if it wants to avoid a confrontation. “It could come to a crash, to a split,” he told Austrian radio.

Housewife Nur Arifah did not expect the announcement, which came late on Monday, and got up early that day to cook plenty of stewed beef for her family in Jakarta. “My nephews and nieces have all gathered in my father’s house to celebrate with new clothes, yet it’s the wrong day. The market has already shut, so for me to be able to cook a new dish…we might as well eat instant noodles for Eid al-Fitr,” she said.

Many other Muslims who were set to start eating during the day returned to fasting between sunrise and sunset on Tuesday, while shopping malls pushed their closing holiday to Wednesday.

The position of the moon determines the start and end of Ramadan, and astronomers and Muslim bodies told the Indonesian government the moon was too low to herald Eid al-Fitr. But members of Muhammadiyah, the country’s second biggest Islamic group, are still celebrating Eid on Tuesday since some astronomers say it falls on that day. Other nations, such as Saudi Arabia, are celebrating as well.

Last year the country’s highest Islamic authority admitted it had got the direction of Mecca wrong, causing havoc since it meant mosques were all facing in the wrong direction for devotees to pray facing Saudi’s holy Islamic city.

Greek and Jewish communities have existed in Egypt for more than 20 centuries. Sadly, those communities have all but disappeared.

Christians have been in Egypt for more than 1900 years and at one time Egypt was predominantly Christian. Sadly, it seems Christianity in Egypt is also headed for extinction.

If we allow Muslim religious groups to rule Egypt we might as well kiss the Sphinx goodbye.

This is an article that was intended for publication shortly after the Fort Hood Shooting but I shelved it until I could calm down – originally I asked for Chris Matthews to be put up against a wall and shot for aiding and abetting our enemies.

Sadly, our country is still too clueless to understand the threat posed by Islam and so it is unlikely that he will be convicted of those charges and executed as he should be. But I believe that will change after a few of our cities are nuked by Muslims. Then we will be able to take care of hate-mongers and Muslim apologists like Chris Matthews and give them what they deserve.

For now I will content myself with simply calling him a dangerous and useful idiot. Almost two years ago in my article One Bad Apple does Not a Jihad Make I noted that, according to Chris Matthews, we may never know if religion was a factor at the Fort Hood shooting.

But didn’t Major Nidal Malik Hasan consider himself a Muslim first and an American second? Didn’t he complain that the US was conducting a war against Islam? (1)

Didn’t he attend sermons by Yemen-based terror instigator Anwar al-Awlaki (2) who proclaimed that jihad against America is binding upon every able Muslim? Didn’t they exchange numerous emails?

Didn’t Hasan once give a lecture to other doctors in which he said non-believers should be beheaded and have boiling oil poured down their throats? (3)

And finally, didn’t he yell “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire and killing 13?

Call me silly, but don’t all these add up to religion indeed being a factor in the shooting?

We may never know if religion was a factor at the Fort Hood shooting? Really? Oh, come now, Chris Matthews, you are such a consummate idiot.

You could be forgiven if that is all you were, an idiot. However, you are a useful idiot for the Muslim cause. That makes you a dangerous idiot as well.
